Species Information

Summary:
Features include 1) a fibrillose or fibrillose-scaly cap that is rose red to pink, 2) pale yellow flesh that is unchanging or turns slightly blue when cut, 3) large radially arranged pores that are yellow to ocher and do not turn blue, 4) a membranous veil adhering to the cap margin when young, and 5) growth under larch.
Odor:
somewhat acidic to unpleasant (Bessette), acidulous (Smith)
Taste:
slightly acrid [peppery] to bitter (Bessette), very slightly peppery, bitterish in cooked material, (Smith)
Microscopic:
spores 7-10 x 2.5-3.5 microns, subcylindric [nearly cylindric], smooth, yellowish, (Bessette), spores 7.5-9.5 x 2.5-3.2 microns, nearly cylindric, smooth, a few dextrinoid, nearly colorless to yellowish in KOH; basidia 4-spored, 28-34 x 4.5-5.5 microns, narrowly clavate to subcylindric; pleurocystidia scattered to abundant, 46-58 x 6-8 microns, subcylindric to subventricose, obtuse to abruptly acute, colorless in KOH, thin-walled, often flexuous [wavy], cheilocystidia similar to pleurocystidia (35-40 microns long) and at times in clusters; cap cuticle of compactly interwoven hyphae; clamp connections absent, (Smith)
Spore Deposit:
dark reddish brown to purplish brown, (Bessette), dark vinaceous brown (Smith)
Notes:
Suillus ochraceoroseus is found in the northern Rocky Mountains and the Pacific Northwest (Bessette), WA, OR, and ID, (Lincoff), and BC (Schalkwijk-Barendsen).
EDIBILITY
inedible because of bitter taste (Bessette)

SIMILAR SPECIES
Other boletes under larch include Suillus ampliporus, Suillus clintonianus, and Suillus elbensis.
Habitat
scattered or in groups under larch in conifer woods, August to October, (Bessette), mostly late spring and summer (Trudell)
